3D Specs for Blu-ray finalized

Nice coincident: While being pushed by James Cameron's 'Avatar' in movie theatres worldwide, 3D technology is ready to enter home entertainment as well. Developed by the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) the final specifications of three dimensional movies on Blu-ray are ready to roll

According to the BDA one needs a special pair of glasses along with a newly built display and a - yet to be build - Blu-ray player (or Sony's gaming console PlayStation 3) to watch 3D movies. The resolution will be the same as for usual Blu-rays: 1.920 x 1.080 progressive, the codec for compression is an advanced version of MPEG-4 AVC: Multiview Video Coding (MVC), which separates the pictures for the left and right eye and saves the data with just an overhead of 50 percent in relation to the usual 2D version.

All equipment should be backwards compatible, so one should play all old media (CD, DVD and 2D Blu-ray) with the new players, regardless of the used display technique (Plasma, LCD or beamer), which also means playing 3D movies on 2D equipment is possible.
